The Bernese dog is pleasant in nature and forms a very close
bond of love with his family and is enthusiastic to please and
simple to train. They like children and take great pleasure in
pulling them in carts. “Berners” are compatible with other
animals and make excellent housedogs. They are eager to
accompany their master wherever they go. These dogs are
truly faithful and devoted.
ORIGIN
The Bernese dogs are made up of three colors.
Jet-black is the base color. Clear white and a
rich rust color make up the typical markings.
Proportion of colors is preferred. The rust color

Bernese Mountain Dogs have a thick coat
being slightly wavy and moderately long. The
sheen is naturally bright. Excessive trimming
is not encouraged. Frequent grooming is
by the AKC and officially joined the AKC “Stud Book” in
1937 as a member of the Working Group.

on all four legs, also under the tail. There are white
markings on the chest and the tail is tipped with white.
White on the feet is a desirable trait, but all white legs or
a white collar are serious faults. Any base color other
than black is a disqualification.
BERNESE
The Bernese Mountain Dogs are a native of
Switzerland and were worked as drovers, draft
